The title Tenda Gialla, firstly, refers to the common label for Italian crime movies: Giallo. Derived from the yellow covers of the 1960s mystery novels the term gained awareness naming a specific Italian subgenre of the thriller which, with its sexualised, visually effective stagings, was most prolific in the 1970s.
Tenda, the Italian term for “tent”, outlines the exhibition’s scene: The setting encountered at the Factory Jedinstvo in Zagreb is no white cube, but rather a “box noire” – a darkly tinted, vast space into which a tent can be inscribed as a triangular geometric figure. The tension a triangle may generate is purely formal. A tent shrouded in darkness, moreover, evokes the narrative suspense of the obscured.
Generating a feel of night-time the exhibition also salutes to Piero della Francesca’s Constantine’s Dream (from the cycle The Legend of the True Cross, Arezzo). In this fresco, della Francesca inscribed the supernatural of an angel’s epiphany into the natural quiet of a Roman tent camp.
TENDA GIALLA attends to the diverse interpretations of the notions of “tension”, “suspense” and “potential” within the Fine Arts. Apart from the various artistic stagings, a lecture and a performance will be presented on the exhibition’s subject. Paul Wagner will give a talk on the depiction of power relations within Italian splatter film between 1976 and 1979. Teresa Rotschopf, together with the noise formations Trumatic and The International, will enact a sound performance scoring the exhibition’s theme.
